The town of Kitzingen proactively supports the expansion of renewable electricity generation from wind energy. Thanks to our application, since May 2023 we have been part of the wind caretaker programme of the State Agency for Energy and Climate Protection, which advises local authorities on the expansion of wind energy. The regional plan is currently being updated by the government of Lower Franconia with regard to the designation of wind priority areas. In this regard, the town of Kitzingen is in proactive dialogue with the government. On 22 January 2025, the planning committee of the Würzburg Regional Planning Association decided to carry out the necessary participation procedure for the partial update "Wind energy" (formerly "Wind power use"). The deadline for submitting comments ended on 10 April 2025, meaning that the public participation procedure has ended and the regional planning department is currently evaluating and weighing up the comments.
Two wind priority areas are currently planned for the Kitzingen urban area by the regional planning authorities. We will inform the public about the plans in due course once the priority areas and their outlines have been finalised. Public participation is planned in each case. The exact implementation will be discussed in 2025 and 2026.
The expansion of photovoltaics is monitored by participating in the watt competition, among other things. Kitzingen currently occupies 28th place out of 255 participants in the ranking of cities with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. A large number of PV systems were installed in 2023 and 2024 in particular. The installed PV gross output will soon exceed the 50,000 kWp mark.
