Description of the
If you move out of your home and do not move into a new home in Germany (e.g. if you move abroad), you must deregister with your registration office.
Deregistration abroad can also be done in person, in writing or electronically. When deregistering electronically, proof of the identity of the person obliged to deregister can be provided by stating the surname, first name, date of birth and serial number of the last ID card or passport stored in the registration register (Section 3 (1) No. 17 of the Federal Registration Act). If you are moving abroad, please also inform the registration authority of your new address and country.
If you are giving up one of several flats (secondary residences), you must personally deregister the flat you are giving up. You can do this at the registration office responsible for the secondary residence or the registration office responsible for your sole or main residence. For your deregistration, the registration office requires a completed and signed deregistration form and your identity card or recognised and valid passport or passport replacement document. If the registration register is kept automatically, you do not need to complete the deregistration form if you confirm the accuracy and completeness of the data collected by the registration office by signing a printout. Spouses, life partners and family members with the same previous and future residences can use one deregistration form; it is sufficient if one of the persons obliged to register signs the registration form.
If you are simply giving up one flat and moving into another one within the country, it is sufficient to register at your new address. The registration office at your new address will inform your former local authority that you have moved.
It is possible to deregister ex officio if you have not fulfilled your obligation to deregister.
If you do not deregister within two weeks, you are committing an offence. In this case, you can be fined up to €1,000.
Prerequisites
Actual moving out of the home and not moving into a new home in Switzerland. In the case of a temporary absence with the possibility and intention of continuing to use the home, there is no obligation to deregister.
As a rule, it is assumed that the tenant has moved out if the furnishings required for use are removed from the flat or if the expected period of absence is more than one year.
Deadlines
You must deregister within two weeks of actually moving out. The earliest possible time for deregistration abroad is one week before moving out.
