Description of the
A birth abroad can be subsequently certified upon application to the relevant registry office if the person born abroad has German citizenship at the time of application. The parents of the child, the child itself, its spouse, partner or children are entitled to apply.
The registry office responsible for registering the birth is the one within whose jurisdiction the person born abroad is currently resident, was last resident, or has their habitual residence. If no jurisdiction can be established on this basis, the registry office within whose jurisdiction the applicant is currently resident, was last resident, or has their habitual residence shall register the birth. If no jurisdiction can be established on this basis either, the Registry Office I in Berlin shall register the birth.
Prerequisites
The subsequent certification of the birth is possible for
- German nationals
- Stateless persons, homeless foreigners and foreign refugees with habitual residence in Germany
Authorised applicants are
- the person born abroad themselves
- their parents
- their children
- the spouse or partner
