School travel services; information on designation or registration

Service content

  • Description of the

The State Ministries of the Interior and of Education and Cultural Affairs recommend that local authorities deploy school crossing guards and school route assistants, and that the bodies responsible for school transport deploy school bus marshals and school bus attendants.

School route patrols are set up by local authorities and the bodies responsible for school transport under their own jurisdiction. Several local authorities or bodies responsible for school transport may set up a joint school route patrol. Before setting up a school route service, the school, the parents’ council, the local road safety officer, the police and the local road safety association must be consulted. The Landesverkehrswacht Bayern e. V. and the local road safety organisations will support the local authorities or school transport authorities and, where possible, provide the necessary equipment.

Pupils can take part in the school route safety scheme as school crossing patrols and school bus patrols. We are looking for suitable adults to volunteer as school route assistants or school bus attendants.

School crossing patrols and school bus attendants are provided with weatherproof yellow high-visibility clothing and a traffic paddle so that they can be easily recognised as such.

Their work may be recognised in an appropriate manner at school events or similar occasions. You may also be eligible to receive an expense allowance from the local authority for your voluntary work.

Whilst carrying out their duties, as well as whilst travelling directly to and from their place of work, school crossing patrols and school bus attendants are covered by statutory accident insurance. This insurance is free of charge.

  • Prerequisites

Pupils may only be assigned to the school crossing patrol if they volunteer, are at least 13 years old – or, in exceptional cases, 12 years old, e.g. at Partial Secondary Schools I – are personally suitable for the school crossing patrol, and a written declaration of consent from their legal guardians has been provided. Suitable pupils are nominated by the headteacher in consultation with the form tutors and the road safety teacher.

To volunteer as a school crossing patrol or school bus monitor, you must be of legal age, physically fit, reliable and punctual. You must also be prepared to stand outside in all weathers and always remain calm and in control, even under pressure or in difficult situations. It is often parents and relatives of schoolchildren who help ensure a safe journey to school through their voluntary work. However, any adult who meets the requirements described above can help out with the school crossing patrol.

  • Procedure

The headteacher is responsible for selecting suitable pupils, in consultation with the form tutors and the road safety teacher.

Adults can sign up to volunteer.

  • Notes

School crossing patrols or school bus escorts arrive at their assigned location near the primary school in the morning before school starts and/or at lunchtime when lessons finish, for around half an hour on each occasion. At traffic lights, zebra crossings or designated crossing points, you will help schoolchildren cross the road. A single location may be covered by several school crossing patrols, who take turns to cover the days or times. Where possible, we will assign you to a crossing near your home. Before your first shift, you will receive training from the police. School crossing patrols are not required during the school holidays.
