Lecture and discussion
: “It Can’t Happen Here” – a 1935 novel by Sinclair Lewis – tells the story of how a populist US senator becomes president and, step by step, reveals himself to be a demagogue – a warning that many at the time considered unthinkable. The lecture explores how this and other narratives address political and social tensions, what historical references they contain, and examines the question of whether and what they can teach us today about current conflicts and challenges.
The lecture is part of the vhs Kitzingen’s “Living Democracy” series and is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection.
