The much-loved ‘Father and Son’ stories have been delighting readers for generations. Yet behind the characters’ humorous everyday lives lies a piece of contemporary history: the illustrator Erich Ohser (e.o.plauen) created them during the Nazi era and used them to make subtle statements against conformity and authoritarian conditions. The lecture explores Ohser’s life, the creation of the picture stories and their historical context. It highlights why ‘Father and Son’ continues to symbolise humanity, moral courage and hope to this day.
