Museums in Kitzingen

German Carnival Museum

The German Carnival Museum in Kitzingen - historically well-founded, entertainingly presented and garnished with carnival decorations - opened in November 2013. Here you can get to the bottom of the history of carnival in a fun way. What do "Helau" and "Alaaf" mean? Why does carnival revolve around the eleven?

Traditional carnival masks, medals with diamonds, shiny presidential necklaces and magnificent jester's sceptres - the Carnival Museum has everything a jester's heart could desire. And even those who don't like carnival will be amazed.

In a "virtual fool's theatre", a multi-media show, for example, characters in costumes from various carnival and carnival regions tell their stories. Experience the deafening roar of the parades and the dazzling riot of colour of countless costumes up close. The carnival museum was expanded in 2019 to include a training academy run by the German Carnival Association. The "Kulturzentrum Deutsche Fastnachtakademie" serves to support active carnivalists, such as the training of carnival speakers and guard dancers from all over Germany.

Conditorei Museum

The confectionery museum is located in the Poganietz House on the market square, a Renaissance half-timbered house dating back to 1556. The "sweet art" has been practised here since 1722 - initially as a gingerbread and honey bakery, later as a confectionery and pastry shop. The business existed without interruption with changing owners until 1937 and is closely linked to the Schmitt-Poganietz family.

Today, the building is home to the Rösner bakery. On the first floor, an elegant Viennese-style café with around 60 seats invites you to linger. Next to it is a small, private collection that provides an insight into the traditional craft of pastry chefs and confectioners. Wooden models, sulphur moulds and intricate sugar decorations bear witness to great creativity and craftsmanship.
