Every family knows the feeling: sometimes everyday life just gets the better of you! This can be particularly stressful for families who don’t have a local support network or other sources of help. This is where the ‘WirKT KinderPaten’ project run by the Volunteer Centre comes in. It has been operating successfully in Kitzingen since the end of 2024 and has already helped many families with their day-to-day lives. It brings volunteers together with families who need support with short-term childcare gaps in their daily lives.
“As a child mentor, you’re not just giving your time; you’re also offering reliability, attention and joy,” says the project coordinator, Sabine Laschinski-Mitnacht from the WirKT Volunteer Centre. Whether it’s playing together, helping with homework or simply being there: mentors accompany a child for a part of their journey through life, thereby providing significant relief for the parents. In consultation with the family, each mentor decides how much time they can and wish to commit. A prerequisite for volunteering is attending training sessions on topics such as ‘Child development and needs’, ‘Child welfare/child protection’ and ‘First aid for children’. A new training course is planned for November/December 2026!
