Fishing licence; application

Service content

Please note in particular our information under:
  • Description of the

If you wish to fish in Bavaria, you must carry a valid fishing licence and, as a rule, a valid permit, and present these to the authorities for inspection upon request.

The fishing licence for adults is issued as a lifetime licence. Young people who have reached the age of 14 and have successfully passed the fishing examination are, as a rule, also issued with a lifetime fishing licence.

All children and young people aged between seven and 17 inclusive are permitted to fish themselves provided they are accompanied by an adult holder of a fishing licence (Art. 47(2), first sentence, BayFiG). The accompanying adult is responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal requirements, in particular those relating to animal welfare. Young people are not required to pay a fishing licence fee. As before, a separate civil-law permit is required for the underage angler to fish in the specific body of water (e.g. a fishing permit, ‘fishing licence’).

Special provisions apply to people with severe disabilities under certain conditions.

Anyone staying in Germany only temporarily and who is not resident here (e.g. a tourist) may also apply for a fishing licence without having to undergo a prior assessment.

Special information for the town of Kitzingen

The town of Kitzingen is solely responsible for issuing and renewing fishing licences.

If you wish to fish in Kitzingen, you must carry a valid fishing licence and a fishing permit (not available from Kitzingen Town Council) and, upon request, present these to the wardens for inspection.

  • Prerequisites

Anyone wishing to fish in Bavaria must hold a fishing licence and pay a fishing licence fee.

Anyone wishing to obtain a fishing licence must, as a rule, have successfully passed the fishing examination in Bavaria. A fishing examination taken in another federal state of the Federal Republic of Germany may be recognised under certain conditions (please enquire at your local council; see also ‘Equivalent Examinations’ under further links). The same applies to exemptions for people with severe mental or physical disabilities, as well as to exemptions upon presentation of examination certificates and fishing licences from other German states.

  • Deadlines

You can obtain a fishing licence upon application with unlimited validity (lifetime fishing licence). Anyone who pays the fishing licence fee for just five years may only fish during that period.

The fishing licence for tourists (adults not resident in Germany and without proof of having passed the fishing examination) is valid for a maximum of three months per year (annual fishing licence).
