Flood protection can only succeed if we work together. As part of its flash flood risk management programme, the town of Kitzingen is in the process of acquiring land for future retention basins or other protective measures, adapting culverts, and regularly clearing the stream beds of trees, shrubs and other floating debris. Residents living along the streams are also being called upon to play their part in these protective measures. Initial successes have already been achieved.
On the Eherieder Mühlbach in Talstraße, for example, an outbuilding at risk of collapse has been secured and large timber storage areas have been removed. Flood-proof doors have already been fitted in some cellar entrances.
Mayor Dr Enis Tiz thanks the landowners for their initiative and calls on all other residents to play their part in flood protection as well. “Do not store materials along the banks of streams and take your own precautions,” he urges the public. Anyone who secures light wells and cellar entrances with watertight covers and installs backflow preventers will significantly reduce the likelihood of suffering major damage in the event of flooding.
